The Latest Gossip

29)Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers. . . 32) Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. Romans 1:29, 32

A friend of mine ask me "Is it wrong to gossip, IF it is true?" That’s one of those questions that you could answer with another question, "what do you think?" How many times have you heard something about someone and it changed your opinion of them? You think in your mind, "I never knew that about them" or "I sure never thought they would do that" or "now that I know that, I will never do this"

The above scripture list whisperers with murders and then continues on to say "that they which commit such things are worthy of death." That’s a pretty strong statement AND it’s in the Bible! What exactly is a whisperer? If you look up the definition of the original Greek word for whisperer it means: slanderers; those who pretend secrecy, and carry out accusations against people, whether true or false; blasting their reputation by clandestine gossip. I would say after reading that definition that my friend has an answer. Yes, gossip is wrong! Whether true or false.

I have experienced gossip on both ends, I have been the hearer of gossip and have been the one gossiped about. Neither turned out good. I knew a person I thought to be a good strong Christian (and probably really is to this day!). This person sang on the praise team of a church that I attended. I was told things about this person’s past that was disturbing to say the least. After being told this information, I couldn’t help but think of it every time she was singing in the praise team. It hindered my worship during the singing. It really taught me a lesson to be careful what I tell others and to be careful of what I hear from others, whether true or not. I have a choice to stop gossip from going any further; and so do you.
